One Million Bones
Last year, one of my dear friends mentioned a project to me that instantly touched my heart for various reasons but, especially, because of its originality and the beauty of its mission…
The One Million Bones (OMB) project is a fundraising art installation, founded in 2009 by young artist, activist, Naomi Natale, and has for goal to raise global awareness on the millions of victims killed or displaced each year by ongoing genocides.
The idea behind this project is to create a vivid visual installation composed of one million bones created by one million people, each bone representing one victim or one survivor; and, have all these bones arranged together in the National Mall of Washington D.C in the Spring of 2013.
In order to raise funds, and provide support and help for these populations, each bone should be sponsored for $5 which would generate $5 millions entirely distributed to, Enough, Genocide Intervention Network, and Women for Women International, organizations that work to protect and aid these victims.
People, who are not able to create a bone, but, who wish to participate in this project are also offered the possibility to have a bone created in their names in exchange of a $15 contribution.
When, simply, not looking the other way, we often justify our non-involvement toward the suffering of others, by hiding behind the convenient excuse that we cannot change the world, that we do not have this power… And indeed, changing the world takes more than one individual. Today, we can make a bone, and have our child, our friend or our neighbor make one as well; and who knows, what would the repercussions of this act be on another‘s life, tomorrow?
